Activists protest against proposed FTA with U.S.

SEOUL, June 3 (Yonhap) — Some 1,300 protesters hit the streets of central Seoul Saturday to oppose a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) with the United States ahead of the first round of talks over the issue scheduled for Washington next week.

South Korea and the U.S. hope to ink a trade pact before U.S. President George Bush’s power to sign trade deals without being subject to congressional amendment expires on July 1, 2007. Earlier in the day, a 146-member South Korean delegation left for Washington to attend the five-day meeting beginning Monday.
